Learning Thai can be done in several ways, there are basically two methods,
with a teacher (in a schoool, friend, private tutor) or self study (using a book
with tapes, CD-ROM software or from the web). Your method of learning Thai language
is going to depend on several factors. For example do you have the time to attend
classes regularly? Can you learn on your own or do you need a tutor?
For those with problems getting fixed time to set aside for learning Thai,
then forget the idea of language schools, instead you could try looking for Thai
language tutors. In Bangkok, you can find them offering their services in classifieds
section of the English language newspapers such as BangkokPost
or METRO
magazine. A list is being compiled on this website. Check out this
link as it will be updated frequently.
Those who would like to learn-by-yourself, there are many books, tapes
and CD-ROMs out there that will help you learn Thai language. Since Thai
langauge is a tonal language, it is essential that you learn to listen
and differentiate the various tones (mid-tone, low, falling, high and
rising). If you are learning on your own, you will need some access to
tapes/CDs or the sound files.
The resource section will provide
you lists of books, software
and websites to help you
learn Thai on your own. This website will of course provide as much as
possible. If you are learning on your own, you can take your own time
and you will not have the time contraints of a regular school.
